Myth wall

Stuff the internet gets wrong

  • Reality

A big bale means a big pile of work, plus pieces that won't sell. Bigger lots usually cost less per piece, but only pay off if you have the time, space and buyers to move them (How wholesale vintage works).

    Read the lesson: Reselling, honestly

  • Reality

Neither tax law nor consumer law has a side hustle category. Buy to resell, even part time alongside a job, and you're almost certainly trading. If you trade on your own without setting up a company, you're a sole trader: you and the business are the same person. A limited company is an optional bigger step, covered in Money, records and tax as you grow.

Read the lesson: Set up properly: hobby, side hustle or business

  • Reality

Buyers know their size in the brands they wear now. A tag from another decade, country or brand may tell them far less than they think, and it cannot show shrinkage, stretching or alterations. Quote the tag and add measurements, every time.

Read the lesson: Measuring and sizing

  • Reality

A new account has no followers, so early shows can be quiet. Audiences usually take time to build, so plan on a regular schedule, honest descriptions and fast shipping, because late shipping also hurts your visibility.

How we check

Figures wear a care label

Fees and rules change. Fees, thresholds and rules in the hub show their source and when we checked them, or tell you where to check.

  1. Official sources firstGOV.UK, HMRC and each platform's own help pages come before anything else.
  2. One registry, every pageEach figure lives in one place, so a change reaches every lesson and tool.
  3. Can't confirm it? We link the source instead of printing a number.

Latest checks from the registry

  2. ,Checked:Online cancellation period, sourcelegislation.gov.uk (Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, reg 29 and 30)

  • Checked. We read the primary source on the date shown.
  • Rough estimate. A rule of thumb, or a sum worked out from official figures. Treat it as a guide.
  • Check this one. We could not confirm it, so we link the source and show no number.

Part 4: Glossary

Speak the trade

The words other resellers throw around, from bales to break-even, in plain English.

150+ terms in the full glossary. Browse A to Z

Bale
A large block of clothing compressed and strapped at a fixed weight, usually sold unopened on the supplier's description of its category and grade.
Cost per piece
Everything you paid for a wholesale lot, delivery included, divided by the number of pieces in it.
Pit to pit
Straight across the chest from armpit seam to armpit seam, with the garment laid flat and smoothed but not stretched, often written P2P.
Comps
Short for comparables: recently sold items like yours, with the same brand, era, size and condition, that you use to set a price.
Single stitch
One row of stitching on a tee's sleeve and bottom hems, a common sign of an older tee.
Proof of postage
Evidence you posted a parcel, such as a free certificate of posting from a Post Office counter or a digital receipt.
Badges of trade
The signs HMRC weighs to decide whether you are trading, such as a profit motive, how often you sell, and buying things specifically to sell on.
Not as described
When the item a buyer receives does not match the listing: a different size, colour or material, damage you did not mention, or a fake.
